Communication Skills

Good communication skill is critical to ensure successful international career. If you plan to migrate to a foreign country for work or higher education, or planning to have a successful career with an MNC, proficiency in English language is of paramount importance. There are various international tests to test your English language proficiency.

International English Tests

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration conducted jointly by British Council, IDP and Cambridge. Typically, the result of this test is one of the entry criteria for securing admission to Colleges and Universities in most countries, especially in English speaking counties like UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. This test tests proficiency in Speaking, Writing, Listening and Speaking. There is no prescribed syllabus for this test but format of the test is published. There are many other international language tests like Occupational English Test (OET), Pearson English Test (PTE), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and DuoLingo. Not all these test results are accepted all universities or countries.

Though these tests are intended to test your language capability, a thorough preparation and right strategies to face the test could help you fetch your desired Band level.

Business English

Ability to speak and write formally and effectively determines one’s growth in any business. Clear and concise communication in English is even more important if you are working for an MNC that deals with clients from other countries. With the invasion of Social Media and short messaging, people are more used to informal and short form of language use which is considered very inappropriate in a Business and Professional environment. Therefore, it is extremely important to learn to speak in an accent neutral English with formal words and usages to be an effective communicator. It is also important to learn to write emails well, especially when you deal with escalations or reporting formally to higher ups.

Indian vs International English

Indians originally learned English from Britishers. However, globalization and growth of IT industry made us adopt many words and spellings used in American English. Besides all these we have added many words of our own to our English vocabulary. Unfortunately, we use a mix of all these in our day today communications without knowing the differences between these when we communicate with people from other English-speaking countries. This could lead to confusion and potential misunderstandings too. It is important to know the different between these to ensure that you communicate with people of any English-speaking country in the way they understand well. For instance, the ‘prepone’ is not in using in any of the English -speaking countries; Units like ‘lakh’ and ‘crore’ are not used in any country outside Indian subcontinent.
